Protein is one of the three nutrients that can be obtained from food and which the body needs in large quantities. Along with fats and carbohydrates , protein is essential for the body.
Proteins are made up of small compounds known as amino acids . There are hundreds of amino acids, but the body can use only 22 of them. It can form all but necessary for its development, except 9. They are known as "essential amino acids" and should be obtained through the diet .
All foods contain different combinations of amino acids and that is why a balanced diet is so important. Animal proteins, in particular meat, dairy products and eggs, contain all the essential amino acids .
Vegetable proteins from foods such as legumes, cereals, nuts and soy are rich in some amino acids , but they lack others. This lack emphasizes the need for a well-balanced and varied diet.
What is the function of protein?
Protein is the main building block in the body, and its main function is to build and maintain tissues . During periods of growth, both immediately after birth, childhood and pregnancy, the body needs more protein. The need for protein is also increased in the following cases:
- The presence of an injury .
- In people undergoing surgery.
- Active people who regularly suffer from muscle disorders during exercise .
In terms of the total amount of protein we consume in a day, it does not matter how it is distributed in the different parts of the day.
It is important to keep in mind that the body can absorb and use a certain amount of protein at once. Therefore, it is recommended to consume the amount of 60 g in three or four meals a day.
