Nutmeg is the core of the bony part of the fruit of a tree of the same name that lives for almost 100 years, and in the first 40 of them actively bears fruit.

Application, composition and healing properties

The properties of nutmeg are known in ancient Rome and ancient Greece. Then people used it to treat many diseases, added it to food and flavored the air with it.

The nuts of the plant contain :

  • vitamins - A, group B, PP, H, E;
  • minerals - phosphorus, iron, magnesium, calcium, chlorine, sulfur, sodium, zinc, copper, iodine and others;
  • essential oils;
  • starch;
  • pectin.

The beneficial properties of nutmeg are manifested in the use of small doses of the nut. It has a stimulating and toning effect on the cardiovascular and nervous systems.

In Eastern medicine it is used to treat men with rapid ejaculation, impotence and other disorders associated with lack of sexual desire.

Very small amounts of nuts are able to calm the nervous system, to restore lost sleep. By adding the product to massage oil or hot tea, it has a warming effect and helps fight the first signs of a cold, increases immunity.

A thick paste prepared on the basis of nutmeg and warm sunflower oil can be used to treat myositis, arthritis, rheumatism and osteochondrosis. The warm paste is applied to the affected area, covered with nylon and cloth. The compress stays for 10-20 minutes until completely cooled.

Nutmeg helps with constipation, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal disorders, as well as loss of appetite and flatulence. For this purpose, mix 125 grams of skim yogurt and water, add 1/3 teaspoon of dried ginger and nutmeg. The combination is taken at once.

Use in cooking

Ground nutmeg is widely used in the food industry and cooking. It is added in the preparation of pastries, cottage cheese desserts, pies, chocolates, sauces, compotes, soups, side dishes, vegetable and meat dishes. It goes well with tomatoes, so it is one of the ingredients in tomato juices and ketchup, which are available commercially.

The nut is also used in the process of making alcoholic beverages (wine, punch, mulled wine) and dairy cocktails with a base as a flavoring. It is also used in canned fish, spicy curry mixes and other food products.

In addition to nutmeg powder, an essential oil is obtained, which is used in aromatherapy, such as perfume fragrance, in the manufacture of cigarettes and pipe tobacco.

An essence is extracted from the bark of the tree, which is widely used in Europe in the preparation of sauces, cheeses and mustard.

Dangerous and harmful properties

Nutmeg contains elemicin, methylenedim-amphetamine and other substances with hallucinogenic and narcotic effects. Consumption of 3-4 fresh or dried fruits can lead to severe food poisoning, accompanied by spasms, disorientation, palpitations, euphoria, stupor, unrelated speech, drug intoxication, hallucinations.

Intake of large amounts of nutmeg can cause coma or death.

Nutmeg oil is contraindicated for pregnant women, people with epileptic seizures and hypersensitivity to the components of the plant.
