The main purpose of the wine glass is to reveal the aroma and direct the drink to the right areas of the tongue, where the taste buds are located, responsible for feeling one or another taste.

The glass plays a great role in the perception and determination of the quality of the wine. Improperly felt aroma - and fine champagne turns into ordinary sparkling wine, the old high-quality cognac - into just such a good one. This is exactly how the shape of the cup affects the taste.

The receptors responsible for the sensation of the sweet taste are located on the tip of the tongue, the sour is felt with the side parts, the various "nuances" of bitterness are felt near the larynx, and the salty is perceived by almost all parts of the tongue.

The shape of the cup allows the main "flow" of the liquid to be directed to those areas of the oral cavity where the flavors will be felt with the greatest force. For example, a wide glass of wine is convenient for taking small sips in the middle position of the head, and narrow options force a person to tilt his head back slightly.

These two sips fall into different taste zones. If the glass is chosen incorrectly, the base of the wine is "distorted" and the subtle flavors (the so-called crown) are not felt at all.

Thus, each different glass allows the flow of wine to be directed to certain taste receptors. In addition to the shape of the cup, the processing of its edges also has an influence - they can be cut at right angles or be rounded.

Today there are dozens of types of wine glasses - an abundance of shapes, sizes, designed for a particular type of wine even.

In this variety it is difficult to find out which choice is the right one, moreover, that each manufacturer strives to bring a touch of individuality and non-standard, which in some cases leads to terrible hybrids, whose only suitable role is to stand on the shelves in the kitchen.

We will try to clarify the issue by looking at the main forms of wine glasses, and they are :

- tulip - the most correct and universal form;

- spherical - less common, but interesting enough option;

- pound - a form that is not recognized by most winemakers and tasters.

Table wine glasses can be made in any of the above forms.

It is generally poured from the drink to fill 3/4 of the volume of the vessel. Wines with a strong aroma and subtle fruity "nuances" require more air in the glass and even less is poured from them.

In the second part of the article we will talk about the different types of glasses according to the type of wine and the "stool".
