Benzoyl peroxide is an organic compound, it is a white crystal. The additive dissolves well in ethers, the degree of solubility in petroleum ether, acetone, styrene, benzene, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl methacrylate and kerosene is medium, and is completely insoluble in organosilicone liquids, water and diethylene glycol. In its pure form, the substance is able to ignite quickly and burn intensely, exploding in large quantities. Explosion is also possible by friction, impact and heating. It is resistant to mixing with water and is an oxidizer.

Use

Benzoyl peroxide is used in the food industry to remove odors of oils and fats, as well as to whiten flour. It is also used as an improver for pasta and bakery products, flour. E 928 is part of some types of cheese produced in Italy.

In cosmetics, the substance is recognized as a powerful agent for the treatment of acne and dandruff. On its basis are produced healing ointments, creams, shampoos. It is prescribed by a doctor because side effects are possible.

In the production of polymers, the additive is needed as a reagent.

Impact on humans

Products containing benzoyl peroxide are not suitable for pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under 12 years. If the use of such a product is unavoidable, breast-feeding should be temporarily or permanently discontinued, as the substance is known to pass into breast milk.

The following side effects are possible with external application of benzoyl peroxide: dryness and swelling of the skin, scaling, redness, allergic contact dermatitis, hair discoloration. In case of contact with products containing the additive E 928, care must be taken to avoid contact with the eyes, mouth and mucous membranes.
