Chlorine can be in the form of a yellow-green gas or a liquid with a characteristic pungent odor. It is obtained by electrolysis of aqueous solutions of common salt or other melts and chlorides. There are impurities of oxygen, nitrogen, mercury, hydrochloric acid. The substance is contained in microdoses in the body of all animals, including humans, in the blood and intercellular fluids. Chlorine is assigned the task of regulating the work of nerve cells and osmotic processes.

In large doses, supplement E 925 is toxic and dangerous. When chlorine-containing materials are burned, large amounts of dioxins are released into the atmosphere.

Use

E 925 is not used as a dietary supplement. In some countries, it is allowed to use it to process the flour, to give it an even white color. It is often used for domestic water purification. The substance plays a major role in the production of PVC, polyvinyl chloride, synthetic rubber. Also on its basis are prepared hydrochloric acid, Bertoletto salt, various poisons, metal chlorides, fertilizers, medicines. It is widely used in the production of bleaching agents, disinfectants and washing powders and liquids. Chlorine is used to make most insecticides that are deadly to insects but safe for plants.

Impact on humans

Although the human body contains a small amount of chlorine, its direct effect on humans is unfavorable. Inhalation of E 925 vapors leads to burns of the mucous membranes, pulmonary edema, shortness of breath, irritation of the respiratory tract. Inflammation, redness, chemical burns may occur on contact with the skin. Due to these properties and other properties, the substance was used as a chemical weapon during the First World War.
