Magnesium stearate, or the magnesium salt of stearic acid, is a substance in the form of a slightly soapy white powder. It dissolves in alcohol, in oils, but not in water. It is produced from animal or vegetable fats.

Use

Magnesium stearate is mainly used in cosmetics and pharmacology. It is used as a filler in the bases for making decorative cosmetics, put in powders as a binder, increases the volume of the product. Added to mineral cosmetics, prevents the formation of lumps, hardening and improves its consistency. It is widely used in the manufacture of creams, lotions, conditioners, shampoos and other cosmetic products.

In pharmacology, E 572 is used as an aid in the manufacture of drugs.
