Club soda, seltzer, sparkling, and tonic water contain very few nutrients. All beverages except tonic water contain zero calories and sugar.

As long as there are no added sugars, sparkling water is just as healthy as still water. Unlike sodas, carbonated waters don't affect your bone density or greatly damage teeth. They can make you feel gassy or bloated, so you may want to avoid them if you have gastrointestinal issues.

Sparkling water can help keep you hydrated, and as long as it's plain and unsweetened, it won't cause you to gain weight, Brigitte Zeitlin, MPH, RD, CDN, a registered dietitian in New York City, told POPSUGAR.

Carbonated water — water into which carbon dioxide has been dissolved — is a broad term that encompasses all fizzy waters; it's used interchangeably with sparkling water and soda water (a prewar term for the same thing). Within this category, there are several distinctions: seltzer, club soda, and mineral water.

Carbonated beverage consumption has been linked with diabetes, hypertension, and kidney stones, all risk factors for chronic kidney disease. Cola beverages, in particular, contain phosphoric acid and have been associated with urinary changes that promote kidney stones.
