The most common causes are salmonella, followed by Campylobacter and Vibrio spp.
More and more people get sick from pathogens spread by food , according to FDA. Infections are becoming more common when eating chicken and seafood. The trend of food poisoning caused by species of the genus Campylobacter , which survive in poor meat preparation and cause food poisoning, is worrying. The second most common source of Campylobacter is unpasteurized milk. Infection with Vibrio cholerae , which causes cholera, is most common when consuming seafood .
According to the FDA, the disease of different pathogens has a different profile. Campylobacter affects all ages, but hospitalization occurs mostly in children under 5 years of age. Vibrio cholerae and related bacteria most often cause disease in those over 65 years of age.
However, Salmonella still holds the lead in the number of food poisonings caused - out of 19,531 cases in 2012, 7,800 were caused by salmonella . Other pathogens that can cause food poisoning are Shigella , Cryptosporidium , Escherichia coli , Yersinia, Listeria and Cyclosporidium . All of them can lead to a week-long illness with vomiting and diarrhea.
Although a trivial infection for people with a functioning immune system, the disease can be fatal in immunocompromised - in 2012, 68 such cases were registered, as well as 4564 hospitalizations.
The most deadly are Salmonella and Listeria , which lead in the number of deaths and relative mortality, respectively.
