Fasting Makes Women Talk Less

Few things can make a woman silent. A study in Lebanon proved that fasting is one of them.

Few things can make a woman silent. A study in Lebanon proved that fasting is one of them.

Researchers at the American University of Beirut observed 28 women during Lent in connection with Ramadan. They were monitored for acoustic changes in their voices and endoscopic examination of the larynx of each of them was also performed. The women themselves have described whether it is difficult for them to speak.

23 of them reported difficulties during fasting, and half complained of "voice fatigue" - a condition that reduces the duration of speech. Some found a drop in voice even to hoarseness.
The main reason for these changes is thought to be dehydration, as fasting during Ramadan also includes restricting fluid intake.

These data can be used in the treatment of vocal problems - by consuming enough water.
